Alexander’s short play for the Lyceum at Home project has received a tremendous response. Last week it played at the Eric Liddell Community centre for Day Care clients. The performance was covered on the MSN home page.
The impact of the tour is already being felt. At the Eric Liddell Community, audiences included Day Care clients and special guests, creating a shared experience that resonated deeply.
“We were absolutely thrilled to have Sir Alexander McCall Smith himself sitting in the audience alongside our Day Care clients to watch this incredible piece,” a spokesperson said, highlighting the sense of connection and celebration the project has inspired.

Following its run in homes, Lyceum at Home will move to The Lyceum stage from 18 – 20 June, where all four specially commissioned plays will be presented together for the first time as a compelling quadruple bill.
Written by leading Scottish voices, Apphia Campbell (Black is the Color of My Voice, Through the Mud), Sir Alexander McCall Smith (The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, 44 Scotland Street), Isla Cowan (Alright Sunshine, To the Bone) and Stephen Greenhorn (Sunshine on Leith, River City), each 30-minute monologue offers a distinct yet interconnected portrait of Edinburgh life. Together, they capture the lives, choices and everyday moments that shape the city.
The programme includes:
Loved Too Hard by Apphia Campbell, Directed by Zinnie Harris, Performed by Natali McCleary
A sharp, intimate look at what happens when imagined connection becomes unsettlingly real.
Love Letter to a City by Alexander McCall Smith, Directed by Ben Harrison, Performed by Graham Mackay-Bruce
A tender portrait of love and youth in 1990s Edinburgh, set against the backdrop of a changing world.
The Sights by Isla Cowan, Directed by Shilpa T-Hyland, Performed by Katrina Allen
A disillusioned tour guide rediscovers Edinburgh through an unexpected encounter.
Dylan’s Big Day by Stephen Greenhorn, Directed by Eve Nicol, Performed by Ryan Hunter
A young man’s chaotic day becomes a heartfelt, revealing moment of connection in a stranger’s home.
Part of the Lyceum’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, Lyceum at Home is both a celebration of the city and an invitation to see it anew, through the voices, lives and stories that define it.
Tickets are now available for The Lyceum stage performances from 18 – 20 June, offering a unique chance to experience these special stories brought together for the first time.
