Authors across the UK have come together to send a letter to the Prime Minister to urge him to consider books as essential items and in so doing, allow bookshops and libraries to remain open if they so wish during this time of Covid. For many of us books offer an escape when we are home-bound. Or a support during periods of loneliness and despair. For others, they allow research and work to continue. And parents the tools to help with their children’s education. And for some – a great many in fact – bookshops and libraries are an essential source of recommendation at a time when that is much required. The affable presence of booksellers and librarians encourages literacy and the exchange of ideas and knowledge within the community. We are grateful to them all.
